Magnum Ice Cream Craze

Magnum Ice Cream and the Thin Line Between Love and Hate

We may not be the pickiest eaters in the world, but we are somehow slightly cynical when it comes to trying out something we think has been done before. We are more adventurous now though and we’d try anything once. If something’s overpriced and it didn’t wow us, there’s no way we’re coming back to try it the second time. With all that said, we don’t easily fall for products that get all hyped online or even through traditional media. We’ve been seeing and hearing a ton of raves about this Magnum Ice Cream that when Ken and I were at the grocery last week, we finally decided to try it. The verdict? Read on.

Magnum Ice Cream - Vanilla ice cream coated with Belgian chocolate

We really thought it’s one of those overhyped or overrated ice cream products, but we were pleasantly surprised when we took our first bite of this new frozen delight. We agree with someone who said it’s the poor man’s Haagen Dazs. ๐Ÿ˜€

For Php 50 (at SM Hypermarket), you get a generous filling of creamy and rich vanilla ice cream, lovingly coated with lusciously good Belgian chocolate. Two of our favorites combined!

Magnum Ice Cream Classic variant

There are currently three (3) variants – Classic (bittersweet), with Almonds, and Chocolate Truffle. We have yet to try the last one, but Ken and I already have our favorites – mine’s the classic, Ken loved the almonds because of the combination of nuts and milk chocolate. I also heard there were other flavors available in other countries like Mochaccino, Dark, White and Mint. Those, I gotta try! ๐Ÿ˜‰ And I’m sure Ken will drag me to S&R in a few days since it’s the only place where we heard the Double Caramel flavor is available. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Social Climber Ice cream - seriously

By the way, Ken saw a photo circulating saying this is the social climber’s ice cream. Seriously? For Php 50-60, you call that social climbing? ๐Ÿ˜€ Just like what Ken said, if he’s to “social climb”, he’s going to buy one of those Haagen Dazs stick bars, keep the wrapper and iwawagayway nya pa while inside the jeep or while strolling at the mall. ๐Ÿ˜€

We buy ice cream here at least once a week because of the humidity these past 2 months. We get much more flavor, satisfaction and goodness from this ice cream than the regular ones being sold at Php 21-45 here at our area in Malabon. So, no, we don’t think this is overpriced.

Magnum Ice Cream is coated with Belgian chocolate

I honestly don’t understand why a lot of people are hating on this, saying it’s overpriced Pinipig Crunch, or it tastes “normal”. For us, no, it’s not your regular ice cream stick. Well, if you’re used to eating Cadbury or Belgian chocolate, and creamy vanilla ice cream at least 3 times a week, it may be normal to you.ร‚ย  ๐Ÿ˜€ Just saying. ๐Ÿ˜‰

For us regular peeps, Magnum Ice Cream is a very affordable high quality ice cream and we won’t mind paying Php 50 for it. Magnum is more of a luxury indulgence for people on a budget. ๐Ÿ™‚

The amount of haters this product now has could be a result of all the hype it received online that started a few weeks ago. And you know what happens when something gets that much buzz online – it produces a wave of positive and negative reactions from everyone. I’m not to argue that many participated just to be “in” (and those who blatantly say they hate it are also part of this, if you ask me ๐Ÿ˜‰ ). Curiosity got the best of us when we finally gave in and bought it at the grocery, and I believe that majority of those who did try the product was bit by the bug.

I hear a lot of people saying it’s not worth all the raves it’s been getting. If it was advertised or promoted the regular way, I think people’s reactions will be completely different. But, kudos to their marketing strategy because it did keep everyone intrigued. Admit it or not, all that somehow persuaded you into finally tasting it (or if you haven’t, how you badly want to see for yourself what the buzz is all about). ๐Ÿ˜‰ Some even blogged about it just to say how much they hate this new ice cream and that they’re never buying it again. To that we say to each his own. ๐Ÿ™‚

Magnum Ice Cream Almond variant

Again, it was all a very effective marketing strategy. You may hate all the buzz this ice cream is getting, but if you were vocal about it, again, you played a part in promoting this product. ๐Ÿ˜‰ I say GET OVER IT. It’s a yummy ice cream, PERIOD.

By the way, I’m not a big fan of the name “Magnum”. Nonetheless, it’s one of our favorite ice cream products now. It’s so accessible and a great addition to our usual comfort food. It might not be the best ice cream out there, but for its price, we think it’s way above average. Yet, we still have to try those Korean ice cream someone suggested (Melona, etc). ๐Ÿ™‚

Oh, and lastly, Magnum ice cream was originally a brand from Denmark. It’s now distributed by one of the top ice cream brands in the country, Selecta in partnership with Unilever and RFM. We wonder how long this hype will last or if they can maintain it.

Magnum ice cream Classic variant - priced at Php 50 at Landmark

When we posted a photo of Magnum Ice Cream on Facebook, we got a lot of mixed reactions and a couple of recommendations too. We’re now on the lookout for more high quality ice cream. Keep posted for more cold delights features here that’s just so timely. You can use the comments section to suggest your favorites. ๐Ÿ™‚

Disclosure: Nothing to disclose since this isn’t sponsored. We just love it. ๐Ÿ™‚

  1. Almond FTW! I don’t like ice cream talaga so Haagen Dazs holds no allure for me pero I really liked Magnum Almond. Don’t like Chocolate Truffle though, too sweet.

    1. Ken LOVES the Almond variant! I also super enjoyed it, even when I’m not that into anything with nuts. We’ll share na lang siguro the chocolate truffle if it’s too sweet.

  2. I love Almond!ร‚ย Wah I hope they sell Double Caramel din sa 7-11… Pati the other flavors na nasa ibang bansa. ๐Ÿ˜€

  3. Mhel, very well said and for me this is “balanced” blogging, unlike some that I read na puro rave or puro rant sa simpleng bagay lang naman… ice cream. And I think the way you described the hype and the product itself is fair.ร‚ย  And you know what I totally agree with this, “it’s a luxury indulgence for people on a budget” mas mura sa tub ng ice cream, ka presyo ng 2 beer, isang linggong load, 2 packs of yosi, dalawang cornetto. (pili ka jan – kanya kanyang trip) So what’s the fuss all about sa price? : )

    1. Thank you, Saji. We always keep the balance on all our blog posts, whether pa we were invited or not. But, this one, I had to also consider what the “haters” are thinking din.

And yes, luxury indulgence sa mga kuripot na gaya namin. :)) Thank you, pare. I miss you! ๐Ÿ™‚

  4. Mhel you must be my long lost sister because that’s exactly what I told someone who told me that Magnum is a “social climbers ice cream”!ร‚ย

I was like… “Dude, no offense if P60 bucks is too “sosyal” for you, you’re gonna need to look for a better paying job. It’s not like i’m buying a Ferrari.”
At the end of the day, whether its a P60 bar of Magnum or a P10 cone of dirty ice cream, it all boils down to your own personal taste.. which others should never “hate” on.ร‚ย

I love the almond.. the truffle and classic are all right.. but to me the beauty of it isn’t so much in the ice cream, it’s in the Belgian chocolate.ร‚ย

    Awesome post :)ร‚ย

    1. Right!! I don’t get why they think this is too “sosyal”. Maybe because of all the celebrity endorsers and the kick-ass elite launch event. But, Php 50 is not expensive considering you’re getting Belgian chocolate noh. And yes, the chocolate coating made all the difference talaga. ๐Ÿ™‚

      Thanks, Richie! ๐Ÿ™‚

  5. Well said. Hindi ko rin maintindihan kung baket ang daming haters ng Magnum. Kanya-kanya lang yan. Walang basagan ng trip di ba?ร‚ย I already tried the 3 flavors and my favorite would be the Classic.ร‚ย

  6. I guess those who gives Magnum a negative impression are either “Don’t know how to appreciate Ice Cream Bars” or simply “Don’t have the money to buy it.”

Since its Red Carpet event pala, I consume 2-3 Magnum Almonds in a day. ^_^

    1. Ouch! Hehehe. Not everyone naman. I think we have this tendency to be defensive or negative when something’s overly hyped kaya nauunahan. ๐Ÿ™‚

And, wow. Good thing manong who’s selling Selecta ice cream here doesn’t have Magnum, otherwise, baka madalas din, especially when it’s this hot. ^_^

      1. Yeah! I just don’t get it why haters hated it so much as I could assume some have tried and liked it XD.ร‚ย

And BTW, AFAIK, Magnum’s market would be those who are willing to spend for indulgence. In short, its not for everybody XD

  7. I have tried Almond and Choco Truffle and I like Almond!ร‚ย  I wanna try the Classic din!ร‚ย  At first, namahalan din ako sa kanya (I’m one of those on a budget, hihi) pero when I tasted it, it’s worth the price naman pala because it really is not the usual ice cream on stick….ร‚ย :)ร‚ย

    1. Same thing with us. We were like, “Php 50? Dapat masarap ‘to!”. And when we bit into the crispy chocolate filling and the vanilla ice cream, we looked at each other and said, “Yummmm kaya palaaa” :))

    2. I agree that it was yummy/pleasant–your usual serving of decent ice cream. But the taste is forgettable, I don’t crave for it at all. And given the hefty price tag (my Php50 can go elsewhere, thank you), I likely won’t be buying it any time soon. But to each his own.

  8. I’ve only tried the TRUFFLE and I LOVED it so much. On Korean ice cream, a lot of my friends love the fish shaped ice cream, my mom loves Melona but they’re all not a huge fan of the red bean flavored ones.

  9. I tried the Classic 3 weeks ago. I didn’t posted any pics w/ me eating it on facebook and on twitter, hehe. But true enough, this is not the usual commercialized ice cream on stick that you can buy in stores. 50 pesos is really worth it for this ice cream.

  10. People who hated it probably hated it because they thought it was too expensive. ๐Ÿ˜› I happen to love it, I don’t usually like vanilla ice cream, but this one I liked, it was oh so creamy and delish, not at all like a pinipig crunch, OA naman. Whoever said that probably has damaged taste buds because they can’t tell the difference. ๐Ÿ˜› I haven’t tasted the Almond yet but I like the Classic better than the Truffle.. ๐Ÿ˜€ Now that you mention it, it does remind me of Haagen-Dazs.. ๐Ÿ˜€ LOL @ Ken’s comment about wagging a Haagen Dazs wrapper in public, ang saya i-imagine.. ๐Ÿ˜€

there’s mint?! I would loooove to try that. ๐Ÿ˜€

    1. It’s not really expensive naman considering the amount of ice cream and chocolate you’re going to get. Ewan ko ba why people are saying it’s too expensive. You’re not supposed to eat it every single day naman.

And about the wagging thing, hahahaha nakoh, know that he has the guts to actually do it. ๐Ÿ˜€

      1. ร‚ย Ganun talaga, alam mo naman mga kuripot na tao.. ๐Ÿ˜€ I agree, I think it’s worth its price naman.. ๐Ÿ˜€ Dito mas mabenta ung Classic at Almond, ang madami dito ung Truffle.. ๐Ÿ˜€

      2. try the 69 gram drumstick for 369Php ร‚ย and compare this with the magnum 70 gram drumstick for 50 Php

  11. Finally! Obviously, I can now see your post about Magnum! A week ago, when I tried this very controversial Magnum… The ice cream inside taste like an ordinary vanilla ice cream, but, theร‚ย Belgianร‚ย chocolate is reallyร‚ย irresistible! The taste is somewhat similar to Cadbury chocolate… Then, 2 days ago, I tried the Chocolate truffle, I guess, it’s better than the classic one. I haven’t tried the almond, I’m still in search for it, hehehe! I’m actually starting to love Magnum! =)

    1. I haven’t tried Chocolate Truffle yet!! I hate you!! :))
I already asked the ice cream street vendor here to go to us first next time he’s got new stock of Magnum… I’ll just give him extra for the effort. I desperately want to try the truffle!!

We might go to S&R next week to buy caramel… and we’ll have a magnum party here! :)) Just kidding. We can’t buy them individually kasi sa S&R so we might give some away just to try it. Adik kasi si Ken sa caramel :))

  12. yeah..love melona ice cream!..strawberry flavor!..muah!..
And to Magnum Ice Cream?…well i said congrats..P50 is really worth the price!!..
For me mas love ko ang Magnum ngayon hahah..i’m an avid fan of chocolates ksi..(^_^) …geeee,… Haven’t tried Magnum Truffle yet, box office kasi sa store pati na ang Almonds..sobrang nakaka-inis kahit yung classic flavor palaging ubos..if your planning/craving for Magnum, you need to buy as early as you can.. =)

    1. We thought nga na imagination lang yung ‘scarcity’ effect eh, but we were at SM North Hypermarket and we looked for Magnum, hiniwalay na nila yung freezer, sa me labas na. Para ata ipakitang simot ang Magnum ๐Ÿ˜€

  13. Buying haagen dazs is NOT social climbing.ร‚ย  There’s nothing sophisticated about eating that.
What’s withร‚ย  people in the PHilippines thinking that if they bought something imported and overpriced, then it means they’re “sosyal”

Almost everyone who works an 8 to 5 job in an office can afford haagen dazs (whatever its spelling is).

  14. I also find it quite funny that you would call magnum as the poor man’s haagen dazs. Oh please,
you don’t have to be rich to afford haagen dazs.ร‚ย  BTW, I don’t like them both.

    1. The phrase didn’t come from us. Yeah, you don’t have to be rich to afford Haagen Dazs, but not everyone would be willing to spend Php 100+ for an ice cream bar / stick.

And, AGAIN, to each his own. ๐Ÿ™‚

      (Relax lang ^_^)

      1. Sorry ร‚ย I paid 369 php for a drumstick from haagen-dazs .I bought it in a supermarket ร‚ย with the price on the free loan fridge from this company on the bottom of the door so the price is really hidden ร‚ย This must be the most expenses ice cream ร‚ย in the world you can buy . us$9.00 for a drumstick in the Philippines. Is the price of this drumstick not the staff member wages working in a haagen-dazs sweat-store ร‚ย working from 8 to 5.

    2. sorry 7 magnums for the price of 1 haagen dazs ร‚ย  ร‚ย which family with 5 children really can afford to spend 2583 php for 1 drumstick each ร‚ย .

  15. Funny, but I thought Magnum was introduced in the Philippines waaaay back… even before 2007. I started seeing it here in the US just last year, and I thought “Uy may Magnum na din dito!” because I distinctly remember having it in Pinas several years back. I was even thinking that it was overpriced here ($3.99 for 3 sticks) as compared to when I bought it in Pinas.

It is marketed here under Unilever, and it hasn’t gotten a lot of attention like in other countries. But I agree, it is good. ๐Ÿ˜‰

    1. Really? First time I heard about that. *googles*

Ang tindi ng marketing dito. I saw a few people on Twitter asking why Magnum’s too popular here. Hehehe. Thanks for dropping by! ๐Ÿ™‚

  16. Great post about the Magnum. I love how you point out your opinion about their marketing strategy. And I agree; to each his own. ๐Ÿ˜€

On the other hand, Melona is the only Korean ice cream I know. It’s not the type of ice cream that could make your throat itch because of too much sweetness. It has more of the fruity taste, and it’s actually refreshing. Strawberry and Melon flavors are my favorite. I’ll definitely look forward with your post on Melona. =)

    1. Ohh, we haven’t tried the strawberry flavor. We’ve already tasted Melona and will be posting very soon! (and we agree with what you said about the sweetness… ๐Ÿ˜‰ ) ๐Ÿ™‚
