Takoyaki – Japanese Octopus Dumpling

Posted by on Aug 12 2010

Have you ever tried Takoyaki?

I’ve had Takoyaki from different food stands in malls, grocery shops, and food courts. I enjoy it so much and I never really researched on what it’s made of or how it’s prepared. All I knew back then was that it’s made out of batter and vegetables, and that I love it, especially with the special sauce they come with.

The FAKE Takoyaki balls we ordered at Greenhills - CertifiedFoodies.comThese are "FAKE" Takoyaki balls we bought from Greenhills.

However, the last time we were at SM Mall of Asia, we came upon this food stall just outside SM Hypermarket – Musashi Takoyaki.

Musashi Takoyaki claims that they sell "Authentic Japanese Octopus Balls" so we tried it. It’s the best I’ve tried and it had real octopus inside, unlike the others I’ve had that were only made of batter and veggies.

I didn’t even know at first that there should be octopus inside the Takoyaki ball until I saw the video on how to make it from Cooking with Dog.

That was the only time I did my research and found out that Takoyaki is actually a Japanese Octopus Dumpling Ball. So, it shouldn’t even be called Takoyaki if there’s no octopus in it, right?

I’m glad I tried Musashi Takoyaki at MOA. It costs double the price from other Takoyaki food stands, but, trust me, it’s worth it. We love the sauce and how the Takuyaki tastes overall. Here’s a photo of the dumpling with small pieces of octopus in it:

If ever you want to make Takoyaki yourself, you can watch the video from Cooking with Dog at the end of this post. You will need a takoyaki pan or takoyako-nabe, which is typically made of cast iron with half-spherical molds.

We’ll try to make Takoyaki at home soon and we’ll post photos and our recipe right here. If you happen to make your own at home, share your photos or recipes with us, please? Thanks!

wah nakakagutom naman! hehe… whenever i see a takoyaki stand, I will always try it out to compare prices and flavor. Mukang masarap at authentic nga yan. Will look for a Musashi stand sa North area.

Wow, you also watch Cooking with Dog! Nice! I’ve only tried Kuya Chito’s and Samurai in the past and I’m not really sure if they have octopus inside or not. :|

We are lucky to have a great place for takoyaki here in Nashville. The Fuji Japanese restaurant Cool Springs has a very authentic takoyaki. I think it’s better and fresher on the weekends when they do more business, so I usually go on Friday or Saturday night. One of these days I try and make it at home, your video has inspired me!

The most authentic takoyaki I had was 8 years ago in Makati Square (not the Little Tokyo beside it), a Japanese Manga Store that sells takoyaki and okonomiyaki. But after a year they informed me that theyre closing, so they thought me how to cook the real thing. I bought my own takoyaki grill, but there were times na nakakatamad to make and octopus is rarely occasional in Landmark. Good thing, people are starting to rave about takoyaki, and takoyaki stalls start to mushroom around the metro. I scouted different food stalls that sells takoyaki. I even buy frozen takoyaki in Japanese stores. Then I descovered Musashi after 4 years in Harrison Plaza. Eventually they opened up a franchise in MOA. I can say that the Harrison branch serves tastier and more authentic takoyaki. The one in MOA is a bit commercialized. The closest that you could have is from Maru Maru in Glorietta Food Choices and Hana in Little Tokyo besides Makati Square. You should try them.

Aww. You can ask them if they have other sauces aside from the mayonnaise based sauce. Sayang.

  • http://www.justanotherpixel.net blankPixels

Oo nga eh, they’re very strict with photographers. I understand that there are risks. Pero, I’m pointing my camera on a food stall, for goodness’ sake! LOL.

Not sure if they have a branch in marikina or araneta center eh. I’ll ask next time, but, I’m pretty sure their staff there don’t know. LOL.

Tamang-tama, we’re planning on going to Market Market next. Where in Market Market yung Takoyaki na your stepdad liked?

Sure, sis. Take your time. I know how difficult it is to organize something like BC Bloggers. :)

  • Paula

My hubby has a Japanese stepfather who was a cook and one of his fave is the Takoyaki. He likes the one in Market Market but maybe I’ll surprise him one day and drag him to MOA to try this one. Thanks for the tip. :)

wow that’s a complete post of takoyaki, i love your super yummy shots! i agree with your comment on the guards looking at you, they’re so strict with photographers, had the same experience in SM North Edsa, di bale had my shots before the warning :-) by the way meron kaya nyan sa SM marikina or in araneta center?

  • http://www.justanotherpixel.net blankPixels

It is, especially with that yummy sauce.

Thanks sis! Have a great weekend!

I was also thinking twice if I should try it the first time. Now, I love it! :)

  • http://www.justanotherpixel.net blankPixels

The ones we ordered had tentacles. We’re guessing they only use baby octopus at Musashi Takoyaki.

  • http://www.justanotherpixel.net blankPixels

Kuya Chito? Hmm… di pa namin natry yun. We’ll check them out kung me octopus din.

  • Jenn

Ang natikman ko lang yung Kuya Chito ba yun? I like the taste of Takoyaki, I just hope magkaroon ng stall sa SM Fairview.

Thanks for hopping in my blog. :)
